The German Jesuit scholar and cabalist, Athanasius Kircher (1602 1680), wrote his magnum opus, Mundus Subterraneus in 1665 – replete with alchemical imagery and philosophy. He is the father of modern geology and is considered of equal stature to Leonardo da Vinci, such was the importance of his work across a plethora of volumes.

The adventurous spirit once had himself lowered into Mt. Vesuvius to explore the active volcanoe’s inner workings! He was also the spiritual mentor of the painter Nicholas Poussin whose famous painting Et in Arcadia Ego has been the subject of many recent books and thought to hold the secret of Rennes Le Chateau.

He discusses the location of Atlantis as being what appears to be a large Island in the Azores. He maintains that it is a copy of an ancient Egyptian map, thus making it on par in importance to Plato’s own work on Atlantis and giving further weight to Plato’s claims as the two original sources are both Egyptian.

As far as we know, Plato did not include a map of Atlantis in his work. Is it possible that he had the map and original manuscript but they became separated? How Kircher came into possession of the map is a mystery, but it is conceivable that it was rescued from the infamous burning of the Alexandrian Library or the Romans had taken it from Egypt on the fall of Cleopatra’s reign in 30 BC, thus eventually bringing it to Italy and European hands where it was copied through the centuries and survived long enough for the scholar to utilise in his theories on geology.

The map is clearly ‘upside down’ as North is actually in the South. But it could be suggested that this is what gives credence to Kircher’s claim of its Egyptian origins, as the Egyptians viewed their own country in this very same fashion.

The Upper Nile was considered to be in the south by their accounts and placed the Lower Nile in the North. Upside down to the way we view the world today. Turning the map upside down places Atlantis in the Azores with the names of current countries and continents clearly marked by the German scholar. America, Atlantic Ocean, Atlantis, Africa and Spain are named by Kircher and in their correct location.
